The link I posted last night is a speech I have watched 450 thousand times in my life.  I have posted it on every blog I have ever written.  I post it to remind myself to stop before getting upset and keep things in perspective.  I had something pretty shitty happen over the last couple days.  It’s not the end of the world in the grand scheme of things, but its just one more thing to add to the pile.  I was starting to feel down on myself, and I went to this video to get some perspective as I have done often.

One of my passions is poker.  I love the game.  I, like anyone else who has played any significant amount of hands over their life have taken some “bad beats”.  The thing about bad beats is, yes sometimes it was a play you made earlier in the hand, that led to this “bad beat”.  You didn’t charge your opponent the right price to draw out on you or whatever.  You let them get there, by not making a better play earlier in the hand, leading to your “bad luck”.  This is applicable in life as well.  Although at first glance the thing that happened wasn’t really my fault, it could have been avoided if I would have handled things differently earlier.  I could have avoided this all together. 

Meh….being vague I know, but its not something I am going to put out there right now.  Guess I am writing this more for myself and to get the idea in grained in my head, that shitty result yes, but there is always another hand.  Just keep making good decisions and eventually, things will turn out as they should.

The Hand that started it all

I used to play poker

Once upon a time I used to play poker. Played online, played a few times a month with the boys. That seems like a billion years ago.

Oh I still play once a month with my friends in a home poker league I helped launch 6 years ago, but other than that I don’t play much anymore. I used to live breathe and think poker constantly. I still watch it on tv, and play the once a month but thats about it.

I guess in some ways I actually burnt out on poker. Online I was a microstake grinder, and did/do not have the patience to really do well. If I stuck to stakes I had 500 bb for, I truly believe I would do very well. Unfortunately I don’t have the discipline to stay at that level. When you play above your roll, and you get unlucky a few times, its over pretty quickly.

Live wise, I am playing very well over a small sample the past few months. I am making good decisions, and I am very happy with how I am playing. It’s kinda funny that I may actually be playing some of my best poker ever, yet I am playing the least I have played since I started playing poker 6 years ago after the Moneymaker boom. We have a casino opening in my area during the next couple months, maybe I will be able to play a little more then.

We’ll see.

2010 is here

Well here we are, a new year and a New Decade. 2009 was a right off for me poker wise. I had a horrible year online when I did play, and I have had no results in my live games. I did not keep track of results this year money wise so I have no idea if I was up or not poker wise. I had a couple 5 session streaks of wins live in cash games in local games, but I also had some pretty nasty losing nights as well. So all in all a write off.

So what is on tap poker wise for me in the New Year? Well I don’t know. As bad as 2009 was poker wise for me, it was also, by far, the least amount of poker I have played in a year since ’03. I would like to play more live, and with a new casino opening locally it could be possible. Online, I simply have no desire to do so right now. In the New Year, my number one focus is on fitness and getting healthy. I am focusing on stuff that gets me out of a computer chair so that means, if all goes to plan I am at least 3 months away from playing any online poker on any consistent basis. There may be an occasional tourney or something, but as far as a daily session or schedule that is 3 to 6 months away.

As I mentioned there is a Casino opening locally and I am hoping that they bring some good size tourney’s to my area. There will also be cash game possibilities opening up and I hope to be able to play a bit. I had hoped to build a bankroll for the start of the casino being here but some problems with my back that meant some missed time at work, which eventually led to less pay and the aforementioned lack of success on the felt last year, my bankroll is nil. I hope to remedy that situation in the new year.

Lazy weekend, getting ready for some football

Not a lot going on today, just getting ready to watch some football. I went out for some Poker and Wii bowling last night with the boys and had a great time and lots of laughs as usual. I am incredibly lucky to have such a great group of friends.

I return to work this coming week, and its about frigging time. I have been so bored sitting at home it will be nice to get back in the groove, and learn my new position. I have done the same job with another company, and quite honestly didn’t like it, but I am going to give it a chance and make the best of it. After all, it pays the bills.

We are in the process of getting the basement ready to have it finished, and yesterday I carried nearly a dozen rolls of rolled up carpet upstairs and outside, along with a bunch of exercise equipment we donated to a troubled youth home. So I was feeling pretty banged up yesterday. A night out with the boys was just the remedy for that though, and even though I fell asleep at 4 this morning on my living room floor, I am not as sore today as I was yesterday.

Well off to watch some football pregame.

Sunday morning

Not a whole lot going on in my world. I blogged all week on my treo, but have just been too lazy to import them over to the laptop to post. I am sure no one has been checking in to read my drivel anyway, so no biggie. I will have posts up from all week later today.

I played some live poker on Friday night, with most of the regular crew and it was fun. I haven’t played online and weeks, and don’t think I will play until the new year unless I get the bug. I have some poker reading to catch up on. The December tourney is coming up this Friday. Looking forward to it.

Work is going ok, I start on the phones tommorrow. My back is as sore as its ever been, altho I don’t believe work is affecting it what so ever as I am only working half days for now. I would be sore at home as well. Still going to physio and still trying to get it fixed up. Losing weight will be an important part, as I weighed in this am at 236, only a hop skip and a jump from my all time high of 244.

All for now, going to go look for the cord to move my posts over from the Treo, and make sure my football fantasy leagues are ready to go.
