Just thinking outloud

Posted by swljuggernaut on October 18, 2007

Ok, I have gone on a smallish run the past few weeks, and I have gotten good results. I have fought back after a few losing sessions, including 2 hellish sessions. However, there are still holes.

I am still playing on emotion alot, and in order to play good poker, emotion should be removed. Anything I do, be it sports, poker or whatever, I play with emotion, in sports it feeds me, in poker it hurts me. Each hand is independent of each other, and your decisions good or bad of the LAST hand, should not effect the decisions made in THIS hand.

I am working hard on my game the last 4 weeks. As my buddy told me the true test will be how I handle the down swings. Not losing my head completely when i get sucked out on. I mean its limit i have been playing….betting or not people are going to get there.

Anyway just thinking out loud here. I am going to go do some non poker stuff for a while and come back later today and try and right the ship.

As fast as it can go up….it can come crashing down

Posted by swljuggernaut on October 18, 2007

I just got blindsided in a session. I was playing within my roll, (2-4 with 307 bb) I was two tabling. In the span of 20 min, I lost count em SEVEN rivers, in huge pots. I was only seeing 18 percent flops. Then hand after hand….booom river. I was playing tight aggressive, I was betting to try and protect my hand, (as well as you can protect in limit) and still I lost. Which, as they say is “thats poker”.

For the first time in a few days i am under 1000. Not much but I am under. I turned it off, and am taking a break, so that Uncle Tilty doesn’t make the situation worse. What a horrible feeling to play a hand right and lose 7 times in 20 min on a suck out, and then have the fish berate you.

I am leaving the chat turned off from here on out. I admit to getting into a few heated arguments with the fish, and thats just not constructive for what I want to do, and thats build a roll. I am an emotional player and I still go on tilt. This has long been my problem.

I know if i can get out of my own way, I will be a good, winning player. I just need to get out of the way.

Will be back.

Sixth Street

Posted by swljuggernaut on October 4, 2007

I am constantly trying to do all I can to learn all I can about poker. Be it reading books, forums, blogs talking with friends, or listening to podcasts I am constantly working to learn and improve.

A couple weeks ago while looking for some poker podcasts, I came across www.holdemradio.com which is the home to numerous poker podcasts. Lou Krieger has a podcast there as does Alan Schoonmaker, amongst a few hours. The podcast production isn’t always top notch but the content is fantastic.

Upon listening to one of Schoonmakers podcasts, he had a guest named Tommy Angelo that introduced a concept I have never heard of before called “6th street” Here’s a quote that Schoonmaker read from Angelo’s book

“Sixth street starts when the betting stops. Sixth streets starts when no one is talking about the previous hand. Sixth street usually stops by the time the next hand starts, but sometimes it can last for years. Sixth street is when players let their guard down and all the sudden it is safe to reveal classified information to the enemy, its like they don’t even know that the war is still going on”

This is a great great quote. It talks about how much of losing/winning at the poker table is not the cards themselves, but it’s the mental aspect, the history between players who know each other, its your tendencies, and your habits. Great stuff. I am going to do some research on this Tommy Angelo, (his web site is here) and see what else this guy has to say. From his interview, I think he has a lot of fresh ideas (to me) at ways I can look at my game.
