Sprucing up the blog, just surfing around

Posted by swljuggernaut on August 7, 2008

Well I am slowly but surely adding some links to my blogroll there to the right, and adding in some stuff. I really like this new template, but you never know it may change again! haha. Not a whole lot else going on, just listening to some poker podcasts, watching some video’s on youtube and pokertube, and just being lazy pretty much.

I am rereading Ace on the River right now. I bought this book in Las Vegas last year, and read it on the flight from Vegas. As I said yesterday, the poker juices are starting to flow again even though I am not playing online right now and haven’t played live in 3 weeks. I may be playing tonight as I have a couple buddies coming over, but it may just end up being a game of Risk or some Wii.

So anyway, back to the book. I am rereading Ace on the River and will probably finish my second go thru today. Next I am not sure what I am going to read. In the next couple weeks I may read Little Green Book by Phil Gorden for the third time. I read this book first a couple years ago, and immidiately my game really took an upturn. I am not sure if its coincidence or not, but it really gave me a different way to look at the game. So I may read that again before my league starts in a couple weeks. I always considered myself a student of the game, and I am really trying to get back to that.

Here’s a great pot between Farha and Hellmuth, craziness

Recieved a couple new books today

Posted by swljuggernaut on October 16, 2007

Well to ease the pain of snap calling for my tournament last night at the HOY I got two books that I picked up with FPP on stars. I got two of the books I ordered with FPP’s at Stars. I got Winning in Tough Holdem Games, and The Poker Mindset. I am looking forward to diving into these books, especially the Poker Mindset one by Hilger as I am still having mindset issues.

Last night with 4 left at the HOY I really was just playing to get third, and I was nervous about GCOX doubling up, rather than playing aggressively. I will know better next time.

One of the problems I have had over my online playing days, has been impatience. I am not talking about getting my money in bad, cause I just want to play a hand but more on the bankroll side. Trying for the big score, or trying to make 100 dollars a day or whatever. The Mental aspect of my game, along with Bankroll Management by far has been my biggest leaks, and I am working hard to plug them.

So with that in mind I have taken a couple steps to work in fixing these holes in my game. Last night I joined with a 2 month subscription to try it out Pokerfox.net training site. I have never been a member of a training site, so I am using this one to see my thoughts on them. So many of the best players you hear about are members of these sites, so I think it can do nothing but help, and if its not for me I am only out 40 bucks.

The second thing I did was with Frequent Player Points on stars I bought a couple books this weekend, The Poker Mindset by Matt Hilger. And Winning in Tough Hold’em Games by Stoxpoker. I have read great reviews for both of these books and I am looking forward to reading them.

A third thing I am going to do, to slow down, and not be tempted to play 2-4 even though I have been doing very good at the level, is play 4000 hands minimum at 50-1 and 1-2 before I play 2-4 again. This whole bankroll challenge was about instilling discipline and patience in my game, and playing 2-4 with 150 bb’s does not accomplish this whether I am doing well at that level or not. There is no rush. With 600+ bucks I have a good base to start off my roll, and not having to buy in again. Slow and steady is the key here.
