My gaming history

Posted by swljuggernaut on December 27, 2009

Welcome to my gaming blog.  If you just stumbled upon this blog, I hope you see enough to bring you back.  If you are one of my friends that is thinking “WTF, another blog? “  lol, deal with it.  I have 300 interests that run from hiking, fitness, poker, sports, etc, and writing is one of my biggest passions.  Soooooo, you get alot of blogs!

I have always played video games.  I was never a hard core gamer, but I have definitely played some long, intense stretches of video games.  I am old enough to remember and have played PONG.  My uncle had pong, and I remember thinking this was the coolest thing ever!  left to right tennis, up and down hockey.  It was so much fun!

A few years later I got the original Atari but I remember it breaking and not getting fixed.  My best friend had one though, so I didn’t go without for long, and played all kinds of pac man, pitfall, space invaders, centipede, tron, and all kinds more.  Across the street another friend had intelivision and the big game I remember playing alot of on that system was the baseball.  Other games of the day I played back in the early eighties was Donkey Kong and mousetrap (coleco vision).

This brings me to owning the first nintendo.  Of course I played the Mario games, but also loved duckhunt and a few others.  I wasted more time than I thought imaginable playing tetris.  Later in university, my buddies and I played an entire season on RBI baseball on this old system.

Going forward, I remember getting a sega genesis and Sonic the Hedgehog.  I tried forever to complete this game, and then I tried to finish the game without losing a life, lol.  This was a great game that I still play to this day occasionally on my Nintendo Wii.  My favorite games from this console were Joe Montana Football and the EA sports Hockey games.  In university, just like RBI Baseball, my buddies and i played full season keeping scoring races manually on paper before the game would do it for you.  NHL 94, I think at the time I would have taken on anyone haha…..(its funny to say that, when in present day after 3 years away from the game I am the worst EA NHL player amongst my friends).

In grade 6 I received my first computer a Commodore 64, with a tape deck and 5.5 inch floppy included.  Some of my favorite games of my childhood were played on this machine.  Shamus 1 and 2, Questron 1 (to this day one of my fav games), as well as frogger, missile command, mouse trap and many others.

In about 92 I’d say, I received my first multi media pc.  It was a powerful (for the day) computer and cost like 3500 out the door.  On this I played the old windows standards jezzball, solitaire, freecell etc, but also later Quake, Descent, numerous sports games like the EA Maddens and NHL’s, and my all time favorite series Civilization.  I have owned every single version of the Sid Meier series, and have probably played more of that series than all my other gaming history combined!

In recent times I have owned playstation 1, a modded xbox with nearly 200 games, and now a Wii and Xbox 360.  I still own the last 3 consoles, and my family gets use out of all 3.

I was never a hardcore gamer, and much of my recreational time over the past three years has been spent studying, watching, reading, and playing online/live poker.   Due to a bit of poker burnout, I am getting more seriously back into gaming and hope to be able to get back up to speed.  I am seriously behind in the shooters and still not used to the xbox 360 controls.  Since this post is running so long, I’ll cut it short here and come back next time, with a little more of my gaming history.

Picked up GH 3

Posted by swljuggernaut on December 28, 2008

Today I went out with a buddy of mine and braved the crowds at the malls and picked up two games at a pretty good price. I got Guitar Hero 3 with a wireless guitar for the 360 and I also picked up Party Games 2 for the Wii. I have been playing GH3 at the house here as I borrowed my buddies, so I know I like that (hooked, lol) but I hadn’t played the party games.

I quickly tried the party games out and its not too bad. I think its going to be one of those games thats more fun with a couple friends or family, and/or over a few beer. I played a few games of each of the darts, shuffleboard, horseshoes and longdarts etc, and while not perfect I can see them being a lot of fun with my friends. My friends and I compete at absolutely everything so this will be just one more thing to compete with.

As far as the GH, I am slowly getting better, have only been playing for 3 days so Its going to take some time to get to the point that I can compete with my friends who have been playing for months or years. I like it because I can play with my friends or play with the kids, or for that matter alone. My wife hasn’t joined in the fun yet but I am sure if she did she would see that its a blast. I am hoping to get GHWT for my bday but we’ll see, its a couple days away so time will tell!

Hooked on Guitar Hero

Posted by swljuggernaut on December 27, 2008

Ok, I may be the last man alive to have ever played this game, but until today, I had played less than 10 songs in my life on any platform, or any version.  But today, I played nearly 5 hours of this game!  I am hooked.  I stink, but I am hooked.

My kids are making fun of me (8 and 11 years old) because they both have already beaten easy and I fail roughly 47 seconds into Raining Blood, but let me tell you, I will get them in the end! haha.  Right now I couldn’t get a blue note consistantly if you paid me 5 dollars each time I did it and didn’t miss the next 3 notes but practice makes perfect I guess.  Anyway, the feeling is almost back in my forearm, so back to the game.  haha.
